SURGERY

Dr. Ahmed Hassan is an experienced cataract surgeon, having performed thousands of cataract operations in 15 years since completing his RANZCO fellowship.

He is a clinical supervisor, teaching cataract surgical techniques to RANZCO trainee eye surgeons during their rotation at Monash Medical Centre.

Dr. Hassan had the privilege of working with the Royal Flying Doctor Service, providing eye care in Alice Springs and remote indigenous communities for six months in 2001. He also joined Eyes for Africa in 2011, performing volunteer eye surgery in Ethiopia.

 CATARACT SURGERY

  • Cataract surgery may be done by Dr. Hassan at Sir John Monash Private Hospital next to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton. This has the shortest waiting time, usually one month. This is either self-funded or mostly covered by private health insurance.
  • Public cataract surgery is covered by Medicare, with no out-of-pocket cost. Public surgery may be arranged via the waiting list at Monash Health Cranbourne, without any choice of surgeon.
  • Modern cataract surgery is performed as a day case under local anaesthetic with intravenous sedation. Most cases are done with ‘no needle’ topical anaesthetic gel. There is no overnight stay and no general anaesthetic required.
  • Eye drops will be used after surgery for 4 weeks. While some patients are able to get away without glasses after cataract removal, most will still require glasses for reading or distance after surgery.

VITREO-RETINAL SURGERY

  • Surgery performed by Dr. Mark McCombe includes Vitrectomy, Retinal Detachment repair, Epiretinal Membrane (ERM) peel and other procedures. Surgery is at St.Vincents Private in East Melbourne and is coordinated via Melbourne Retina Associates (ph: 03 9650 5771).
